Genetically modified animals - Policy

Pharmaceutical research aims to discover compounds that act on complex diseases. Thanks to their scientific value, the use of genetically modified models makes it possible to decrease the overall number of animals used. Such progress is supported by technological improvements.

Sanofi-aventis must constantly monitor animals to ensure that their welfare is affected as little as possible and that genetic modifications do not represent a risk for personnel or the environment.

As a result, sanofi-aventis:

  • works with ethics committees to implement the appropriate measures in the event a genetic modification would be likely to affect the animals' welfare,
  • develops transgenic mouse models, making it possible to reduce the number of animals used for research and drug safety assessment,
  • develops and validates transgenic mouse models to replace higher mammals, which are still used in certain regulatory tests.
