Leishmaniasis - Actions

Partnership with WHO

New partnership contract signed with WHO in October 2006

On October 10, 2006, sanofi-aventis entered into a new, five-year partnership agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO). Of the sanofi-aventis donation, USD 6.4 million (25%) will be earmarked for combating leishmaniasis. This partnership reflects the Group's determination to be active in the struggle against this neglected disease, in particular through initiatives focused on Information, Education and Communication (IEC). At the same time, the Group is organizing initiatives through some of its subsidiaries in conjunction with local authorities.

Through these means of implementation, sanofi-aventis wishes to

  • Step up the struggle against leishmaniasis (cutaneous form): diagnostics, training, etc.
  • Develop new therapies, if possible (by entering into development agreements)

Transferring production to a factory in Brazil

Streamlining production by manufacturing all treatments at a single industrial site

Meglumine antimoniate is produced and distributed by sanofi-aventis in a number of countries.
In order to make treatment available to the greatest number of patients, a project to streamline production got underway in 2005. It aims to manufacture all treatments at a single site.

Production will ultimately be centralized in Brazil, at the Suzano site. Sanofi-aventis will thus be able to offer a differential pricing policy for this treatment and provide better access to treatment for the greatest number of patients worldwide.

Implementation plan

  • Transfer begun in 2007
